Skinwalker Ranch
Uncovering the Unexplained

Introduction
When discussing Skinwalkers, most individuals would say they have not encountered any, but on a northeastern ranch located in Uintah, Utah, it is not only common to witness Skinwalkers but also to experience paranormal activities. After moving into what he thought was a seemly normal ranch, “Terry Sherman got so spooked by the happenings on his new cattle ranch that 18 months after moving his family of four to the property now known by many as ‘Skinwalker Ranch’ in northeastern Utah, he sold the 512-acre parcel away.” (Janos). What did they experience while they were living there? Are these paranormal experiences caused by a tribe’s determination for vengeance? Are Skinwalkers truly aliens using a portal from different dimensions? To understand the conspiracies surrounding Skinwalker Ranch, it is essential to know its historical background and what happened to cause these phenomena.
Terry Sherman
Terry Sherman was a family man who once lived on the infamous Skinwalker Ranch with his family. When they first came across the ranch, they wondered how they lucked into such a nice piece of property. Following the paranormal events that took place, he and his family were the first ones to ever leave the ranch. After these paranormal encounters, Terry and his wife, Gwen, uprooted their family far away from the ranch in a quick manner. (Janos). When Terry Sherman recalls the encounters he had on the ranch, it is apparent he is caring, often frightened, and even discouraged at times.
Terry Sherman was a caring man and expressed it in many ways. While discussing Terry’s caring demeanor, David Perkins reinforces, “Terry (a rancher and cattle breeder) and his wife (employed for 20 years at the local bank), had found their dream ranch. The 480 acre spread was a remote little paradise. It would be a fine place, they thought, to raise their teen-age and 9-year-old daughter” (Perkins). Not only was he a rancher, but also a family-oriented man who took care of his animals, wife, and children. Shortly after moving into what they thought was a normal ranch, they began to have paranormal encounters. Along with this, “Selling the ranch had posed a dilemma for the Shermans. ‘We didn’t want to put anyone at risk,’ Terry said” (Janos). His desire to leave the ranch was a difficult decision, given his caring nature.
While living at the Skinwalker Ranch, Terry was often frightened of what was happening.
When considering Terry’s frightened state, David Perkins can reinforce that his fear is a direct result of paranormal activities:
During that summer, Terry, his son and his nephew had heard unintelligible voices while standing in a nearby pasture. The sound, which they first assumed to be the echoes of a CB radio, seemed to emanate out of the air directly above them. As they listened more closely, they could distinctly hear two voices speaking in an unknown language. (Perkins)
Along with this, Sherman experienced many other paranormal things. While living at the Skinwalker Ranch, Terry found it hard to overlook the lack of safety he and his family had.
After these paranormal events had happened, Terry Sherman began feeling discouraged and overpowered. While Terry is fighting discouragement, David Perkins implies, “Even while the Shermans wonder if they can believe what they're seeing, their bank account has taken a hit” (Eyck). At first, Terry was determined to fight off his discouraging thoughts, but after a few too many paranormal events, he was left with no choice but to surrender and call it quits. While Sherman grows discouraged, he also recognizes that it will be impossible to guarantee their children's and animals' safety. (Perkins). Eventually, Sherman decided it was no longer safe to live on the ranch.
Being caring, frightened, and often discouraged were traits of Terry Sherman while living at the Skinwalker Ranch. Despite their financial investment in the ranch, Terry knew it wasn’t safe for his family and animals and had to care for them by leaving the ranch. Before they left, he was often frightened when leaving the animals alone at night, as well as his kids, given the incidents that kept taking place. Following their first paranormal experience, Terry began to feel discouraged and felt as if he couldn’t do anything to change the circumstances. Therefore, Terry Sherman continued to be a family man who was caring, sometimes frightened, and often discouraged.
Conspiracies Surrounding the Skinwalker Ranch
Are the paranormal events that occur on Skinwalker Ranch caused by vengeful tribes or aliens from different dimensions? The first conspiracy theory is that the tribes that once occupied the neighboring land want revenge on anyone who resides on the ranch. The second conspiracy theory is that there is extraterrestrial activity, including aliens and UFOs. The third conspiracy theory is that there may be many dark energies active on the ranch.
The first conspiracy theory is that the ranch is on tribal grounds where past vendettas are being settled. Recalling the tribes that used to reside on the ranch's land, Janos states, “Sherman’s family ranch was 400 miles north of Navajo Nation. It was next to Ute territory. And when the Utes and the Navajo did cross paths, it was an acrimonious relationship” (Janos). Even though the tribes used to fight each other on the land, it does not mean that they are the cause of paranormal activities. While interviewing Sherman, Adam Janos finds that, “Among the Navajo, skinwalkers are like werewolves: evil witches who can transform themselves into the creatures of their choosing” (Janos). The tribe's legend of the skinwalker proves that the tribe must have also had similar experiences. Even though the evidence shows that the tribe's legends exist on the ranch, blaming their need for vengeance is not a plausible theory.
The second conspiracy theory states that there is extraterrestrial activity, which includes UFOs and Aliens. Following this, Janos states that, “They’d seen mysterious crop circles, the Shermans said, and UFOs, and the systematic and repeated mutilation of their cattle—in an oddly surgical and bloodless manner” (Janos). Although the Shermans claim to have seen UFOs, this was never backed up with hard evidence or visual proof. While being skeptical, Janos also states, “The Uinta Basin of eastern Utah has been a hotbed of paranormal sightings over the years that some extraterrestrial enthusiasts have deemed it ‘UFO Alley’” (Janos). Because it is named ‘UFO Alley,’ the assumption may be that there is physical proof, but throughout the years, no claims have been supported. The Sherman family and many others have encountered things that looked like UFOs and extraterrestrial activity, but without any visual proof, this theory is not plausible.
The third conspiracy theory is that many different dark energies exist on the ranch. While interviewing the Shermans, Janos clarifies, “Not everything the Shermans saw on their ranch was sky-borne UFOs. They also claimed to see mysterious large animals: most notably, a wolf three times the size of a normal wolf” (Janos). Having multiple different experiences supports the claim of having multiple different dark energies active on the ranch. Along with this, “In 1998, a police officer saw a large plunge light into the reservoir and then reemerge, flying off into the night sky” (Janos). Although this was not on the ranch, it was in the same area where similar experiences are common. When discussing all the different phenomena that were experienced, it is apparent that many dark energies are present, meaning that this theory is plausible.
Although the first two theories are not plausible, the third, in a way, includes them. While there are conspiracies that rely on a single paranormal explanation, it’s much more complex than that. Currently, there are still investigators who try to understand the happenings on the ranch, but the origins may never be discovered. The most plausible theory is that not one thing is causing this; there are many dark energies active on the land.
Conclusion
The Skinwalker Ranch and the land it resides on have an eventful, historic past that causes the land to have paranormal activity. These strange occurrences have caused three conspiracy theories to form, such as past tribes seeking revenge, aliens and UFOs scoping the area, and many different dark energies causing these activities. After considering all the evidence and experiences that have taken place on the ranch, it is apparent that the only plausible cause is that there are many different dark energies at play on the land. Although this is the most reasonable, it may forever be a mystery how these dark energies came to be.
